How the ASB Process Works (Incoming 7th)

How the ASB Selection Process Works

***DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, INTERVIEWS WILL LIKELY TAKE PLACE ONLINE.  HOWEVER, IF IN-PERSON INTERVIEWS BECOME POSSIBLE WE WILL ADJUST TO ACCOMODATE THEM***

Hello, and welcome to Rio Norte!  We are looking forward to meeting your child and beginning to build our 2021-22 ASB class!

Submit an Online Application and Get Recommendations
The first step in applying to Rio ASB is to complete and submit an online application available from this website.  You are also REQUIRED to get a recommendation from your current 6th grade teacher - you may send them the link to the online recommendation form which is also available on this website.

Check for Your Interview Date and Time
Students who submit an online application by the due date will be given an interview appointment.  The date and time of your appointment will be posted on this website.

What’s Happens during Interview Day ?
Interview day is a very busy day where we will get the chance to meet your child, conduct an oral interview, and allow them to work in groups on a project representative of an event that they would work on in a normal ASB class.

Why do you Conduct Oral Interviews?
We conduct interviews because this is a skill that student leaders need to master as they make their way through their college and career paths.  While it can be stressful, the ability to identify personal strengths and weaknesses, anticipate potential questions, exude confidence and professionalism are a part of the Student Leadership Standards that ASB tries to exemplify.  The more your student practices this skill, the more it will improve (first job interviews are only a couple years away!).  In the end, we just want to get to know your child, and this is one way in which to do so.

How Will we Know if we are Moving on?
Based on their online application, their recommendations, and scores from their interactions on Interview Day, we will make the difficult decisions on who will move forward to the next phase of the interview process.  Approximately half the students interviewing will move on to the second phase.  Names of the students moving on to the next phase will be posted on the Rio ASB website at a TBD date.

What’s Next?
If your child is chosen to move on after interviews, they will come to our “ASB Bootcamp” on a TBD date in May right here at Rio Norte in Rm. P-1 (if in-person) or online.  On this day, the selected students will engage in more group work and be asked to think on their feet.  Approximately half of those students will be chosen to be in the 2021-22 ASB class.

Things to Know
Take a deep breath!  This process can be extremely stressful for both your student and our ASB.  ASB is by far the most difficult class to get into on campus.  Please be aware that we know how amazing your child is…the quality of kids who apply for ASB is always EXTREMELY high.  Every applicant is a high academic achiever, is heavily involved in both their school and community, and displays natural leadership qualities.  As a result of the high caliber of student applying to ASB, and the limited number of spaces in the ASB classroom, many incredible students will not make it into the class.  It isn’t the end of the world.  There are many ways to be involved on campus without being in ASB…and we would encourage your student to find them.

Good Luck!

Mr. Sheridan and your Rio Norte ASB
